Toronto Windsurfing Club Mammoth Marathon

I'm writing this blog post many months after the event - but wanted to record it for posterity.  I've entered the TWC Mammoth Marathon a few times.  I'm always impressed by the ability of the TWC regulars in light winds.  In the past though I've been able to at least complete the whole course around Toronto Island.

This year was pathetic.  Due to the very light winds (glassy and 180 degree direction reversal) I didn't even make it past the first mark before they cut the fleet in half.  I sailed the short course, but it still took 2.5 hours to cover the 10k.

I think there were around 60 of us at the start line.  30 made it around the first mark and did the long course. There were some great Kona sailors that came up from the US.  I need to do more longboarding apparently. And using my Techno 148 was likely not the right equipment call - but that's what I had!

I kind of hope the TWC never winds up posting the results.

The goal is to do the long course around the island!

My kids ripping at home...

We had some good weekends at the cottage in August.  The first weekend it was so windy I actually sailed right off our dock in the small weedy bay our cottage overlooks. Normally, I head out into Georgian Bay for better wind, longer runs and cleaner water. After lunch the wind dropped a bit so I did head out into the Bay and found some great spots for vulcan practice... I'm still editing that video.

Later in August we were out in the bay for a picnic with friends on one of the 30,000 islands. My buddy is a windsurfer and so we took out a ton of gear.  My 14 year old son and 11 year old daughter had great planing runs on their JP Young Gun.  My daughter is just starting to trust the harness and footstraps, but planes pretty quickly even without them!  I had a camera on the boom when my son went out and caught some good video.

FYI, I've got a nice complete Ezzy 2.0-2.5 kids rig for sale. Obviously it worked in getting the kids hooked a few years ago!  Interested?
