Knowing I had a 2pm charity call, I decided to head out for a session in the unstable SW wind that had thunderstorms predicted for mid-afternoon.
It was barely showing 9 knots but I figured it would build so I took the 6.5 and the 99 cm foil. After a few tacks upwind I did indeed find wind which eventually got to a powerful 15 knots. I was pretty comfortable and managed some decent jibes. I realized I really need to keep pressure on my back foot toes as I round the jibe to keep the foil carving the whole way through. My speed stayed over 15 km/h through many of the jibes.
After 45 minutes I decided to head in and try the wing. As I headed back out on the wing I saw some impressive lightning bolts. Even though the wing isn’t as scary in a lightning storm as a carbon fibre mast sticking in the air, I still figured it was time to head in. I got inside just as torrential rain started.
Total rain in the hour from noon to 1pm was 21 mm. https://tempestwx.com/station/42510/
The tempest weather station also has some neat charts of the two lightning storms approaching then leaving.
