My daughter told me that snowboarding champs the McMorris brothers said a boarding trifecta would be surfing, snowboarding and skateboarding all in one day. So after wingfoil boarding in Georgian Bay surf and then snowboarding at Blue Mountain, she reminded me I needed to go skateboarding….

Here’s how the day progressed:
After a nice breakfast from Jen, I packed up the car and headed to Sunset point to watch Len surfing. For a while he was the only person out. Then there was another surfer who was being followed by a drone! Hope we can see that footage sometime…

| Len after his surf session |
After Len came in I started rigging up my 125l Duotone Sky wingfoiling board with the 2000 cm² aero front foil. I was heading out just as tourists were taking photos of the lunch time surf crowd and other surfers (including a cheerful woman!) were getting ready to get on the water.
I got a lot of the gear right for today’s wing foiling session. The 4m Duotone Echo wing was the right size. My big board and foil which are nice and slow and steady helped me get out through the waves. I’m getting much better at riding over the big rollers and not overfoiling once over and out on the steep back of the wave.
I’m also definitely getting better at riding the waves back in. In all my past (6 or so) Collingwood big wave foiling sessions I would get scared as I started going on a wave and would try and slow down which of course pitches the foil up and then I’d cavitate and wipe out. I’m starting to commit more to the wave ride, bring my hips forward, keeping the nose of the board and the foil down and letting the wing just luff as I ride the rides. The rides were pretty short but I’m definitely feeling like I’m starting to get the hang of that a little bit. In the NW wind it is weird being toeside and twisted holding the wing while riding the wave. Maybe I should try holding it with the back hand…
I got a whole bunch of great jibes - maybe 12 looking at the GPS trail? I fell in a few times but what was really the challenge was having no harness lines on the Unit 4m wing. I was wearing my 3mil gloves which were fine the other day in 10°c and lighter wind. But in the 15-20 knot 2°c wind the evaporation on my fingertips had my fingernails completely numb by the time I got back to shore after a relatively short session. Definitely the coldest my fingers have ever gotten windsurfing or wing foiling. I also realized as I got back to shore that I hadn’t done up the zipper on my hooded wetsuit! But that wasn’t the part of me that got cold the few times I fell in. It was definitely my fingers. I’m going to try with a harness line and thicker gloves or see whether I can find those bicycle handlebar covers that I bought that have never used. Now I know what they’d be good for.

I’d have to say the session was a big success for me. It helped not having the GoPro with me and feeling like I needed to stop and take photos or video!
What is so cool at Sunset Point is that there doesn’t seem to be any rivalry between surfers, standup paddle borders and wingers. I was the kook winger coming in for my last run towards the beach, riding a nice wave through an opening between surfers sitting on their boards. That resulted in me getting cheers and whoops not people yelling for me to leave their spot. People are really friendly here in Collingwood I’m loving it.

I got my Starbucks Mocha on the way home and got the snowboard out so I could hit Blue Mountain for part 2 of the trifecta…. But not before hitting the hot tub:
