34 kms before lunch

34 kms before lunch. And another 46 after!

Cruising out in the Hatteras sound

The wind forecast was great for the whole day!

Nice warm SW wind predicted for the whole day!

I had a good morning session on the 4.8 and Skate 108. 32 kms with a 47 km/h top speed. Was reasonably dialed but wasn’t really doing many tricks - just mowing the lawn.

I tried Galen’s speed needle but only did one run. Respect for him being able to sail that all day yesterday, I found the sinker board to be too much work.

Not too speedy on the speed needle

I went in for a long lunch and headed back out at 4pm. Everyone was saying that the wind had dropped off and indeed my attempt with the 4.7 and Freewave 116 (no GPS but got the GoPro lead photo) was a slog fest out and back.

So I put the 4.7 on the Stingray 140 with the 99cm foil. I had a nice time linking turns and running downwind but the wind was definitely a bit much. I saw some STINGRAYS while windfoiling back in on my Stingray 140. Very cool. I also took some GoPro footage during that 10 km session.

Fun trails on the windfoil. Linked turns at the top,
Upwind tacking a the bottom

The best part of the day was the 5.6 session on the Skate 108. So comfortable on that board. On my reaches back to shore I was just holding the boom with two fingers. So dialed. Almost as fast as other windsurfers on bigger sails. I just kept on going back out. By the end of it I’d windsurfed 1:45 and done 36 km!

Got my best Vulcan attempt in many years. Good slide, hands on the other side of the boom, in the footstraps, almost getting going again… Almost got a carving duck tack too. Then a perfect carving 360 on my last run in.

After counting up the sessions and realizing I’d done 80km, the hot tub was a great place to relax and enjoy the amazing sunset.

Tomorrow is forecast to be colder with the wind switching 180 degrees to the NE..

  1. Carl, where are you finding the water deep enough to foil?

    1. Thanks Brian, just walking out on the sound side. You can see my footsteps out and then the foil tracks in the GPS trails above. I am using the 24 inch slingshot foil mast which is shorter than what I normally use but prevents hitting the bottom close to shore.

  2. Thanks Carl. I'm headed down in a couple weeks and hoping to pay my dues learning to foil.

    1. Have fun! FYI, we are staying at Kinnakeet shores where the water is ok for foiling. FYI, apparently up by Island Creek, there isn't enough depth in the sound for foiling. Cdn hole is supposed to be good for foiling too.
